CHOW Sends Desks to Panama
Cortland Humanitarian Outreach Worldwide (CHOW) continues its mission of taking
discarded items in our society and providing them to people in need. July 8,
2010, CHOW volunteers loaded a container with 212 student desks, school supplies
for two hundred students, teacher supplies, and teacher desks and chairs. The
desks were collected from area schools that might have thrown them into
landfills. Instead, the schools chose to donate them to CHOW, and they will be
used by students in Panama. The Minister of Education in Panama will see that
the supplies are distributed to the schools in rural areas that are in most
need.
CHOW has been collecting, storing and shipping desks and school supplies since
January, 2000. Since the first container was sent to El Salvador, 4,550 desks
have been sent in twenty-four shipments to twelve different countries in Central
and South America.
School Supplies are Needed
CHOW has student desks for future shipments, but is in need of new school
supplies to send along with the desks. When you are out shopping for your
children’s school supplies, please consider buying a few items for children who
might not be able to attend school without them. The items most needed are
scissors, pencil sharpeners, and 12-inch rulers. The items can be dropped off
at Bazetta Christian Church, Prince of Peace Church, or St. Robert Church Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

KY Flood Victims

While traveling to Grahn KY in June on a mission trip, CHOW volunteers viewed
the destruction caused by heavy flooding in the neighboring community of Olive
Hill. Residents of a federally funded housing development have been displaced,
waiting for the cleanup of their housing to be completed. But when they return
to their homes, all of their furniture will need to be replaced because
everything had to be discarded. July 22, 2010 CHOW got word that the Grahn
community experienced devastating flooding, washing away some homes. CHOW
collected furniture and kitchen supplies to help the people in both communities
start over again.
Scrappers Tickets
To
raise funds for its activities, CHOW is selling vouchers for Scrappers home
games. The cost is $5.00 for a box seat. If you’re planning to attend a game,
please consider buying a voucher and supporting CHOW before August 27.
Volunteer Opportunities
CHOW
is always in need of volunteers to sort and pack school supplies into boxes, to
load trucks when desks are collected from area schools, and to load containers
bound for schools in foreign countries. If you are interested in offering your
help or if you would like to purchase vouchers for a Scrappers game, call Becky
or Bill Costas at 330-637-0219 or email
chowohio@gmail.org
